Politics

There is a tension in the world. Everywhere on earth food costs more for less. Everywhere on earth a having a home is a representation of vast wealth. Everywhere on earth the summers keep getting hotter and the winters keep getting shorter. This cannot last forever.
I foresee a few possible options:

  1. The capitalist nations manage to just barely institute enough ecological and social reform to avoid a full climate and/or societal breakdown.
  2. The people of most nations revolt and manage to institute these policies themselves.
  3. After severe climate breakdown most states collapse and we're left in what we'd call the post-apocalypse.

Given this framework I think there are a few logical things you could do politically. You could appeal to the ruling class for moderate reforms to avoid a popular revolt (as people like tucker carlson are trying to do), you could actively build support for a revolutionary movement to ensure that when the time is ripe we can resolve the many social contradictions in society, or finally you could try to adjust exactly what society breaks down into and where you fall in it. Different people will undoubtedly hope for different outcomes. Option 1 is the safest, most stable option, but doesn't actually solve the things that got us into this mess (assuming you believe they can even be solved).
This may be simple apocalyptic thinking, but I believe option 3 is the most likely. At least in America the things that will have to be done are very unlikely to succeed electorally. However, the second option is equally untenable. A Stalinist or Trotskist style attempt to establish a soviet state is unlikely to succeed, and even if it was accomplished, the amount of resistance would make it essentially non-functional. While I'm not quite so ideologically motivated to say it's impossible that the dictators and traitorous politicians of the world are able to avoid complete collapse, it feels less and less likely as time goes on.

Given that, so what?

f you accept my assertion that an end to our current world is likely.... what do we do about that? The traditional prepper response is to say "I want to be the guy with all the money, food and weapons on the day it falls apart.". I think this is both selfish and shortsighted. Unless you're a millionaire who can actually furnish a decent bunker or a billionaire who could go all in on your vault-tec urges your moleish lifestyle will not be fun. Maybe I'm too ambitious, but watching saved TV shows underground in a vault eating beans isn't how I want to spend 60 years of my life. I propose a more collective, community driven solution.
You should work to build common groups in your local area regarding various shared interests such as electronics, woodworking, machining, agriculture and hunting. This has innumerable benefits in times of great crisis. Once things get to a more dire state, you should also ensure there are solid groups built up specifically for an immediate emergency. Flooding relief plans, volunteer firefighters and so on. You obviously can't save the world, or even a city on your own, but by working with your fellows, developing each of your respective interests, and building a shared bond you ensure that should the collapse come all of you are more than ready to step in to alleviate the critical issues and stabilize your now Anarchic society.

And hey, even if capitalism and the state don't destroy themselves in a mad orgy of consumption and inaction you'll still have made a few friends and possibly learned a few skills!
